The Edisto River lost one of its greatest champions with the passing of Charlie Sweat on January 6 of this year. An avid canoeist, nature photographer and nature-based tourism supporter, Charlie was a founding member of the Edisto River Canoe and Kayak Trail Commission and its longtime leader and guiding spirit.
Charlie Sweat lived a lifetime of public service, serving 27 years on Walterboro City Council and one term as mayor. Charlie also served on the ACE Basin Task Force, was the first president of the South Carolina Nature Based Tourism Association, President and Board of Directors member of the SC National Heritage Corridor and much more.
The Edisto River and those who love it have lost a dear friend, but his influence will be felt for years to come. Charlie’s memory and spirit will flow with the Edisto as it winds its way downstream and reveals the beauty and awe of the natural world.
